Old movies, as old as the time of black-and-white receptions, posed a ‘cool’ and ‘sexy’ image among cigarette-smoking actors.

Actors like Humphrey Bogart and Bette Davis were hardly seen not puffing their cigarette. Smoking helped them build their image to the public and made them more noticeable and easily-remembered.

On the contrary, present movies projecting a smoking ‘incident’ fell down to 49% from its recent peak on 2005. This is because Hollywood is one of those who campaign about the dangers of cigarette smoking.

As movies highly influence its audience, movie producers and actors are making their best to discourage the stuff. Instead, the use of electronic cigarettes has penetrated Hollywood to promote healthy smoking.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that scenes of smoking in high-grossing films fell to 1,935 “incidents” in 2009, down 49 percent from a recent peak of 3,967 in 2005. Still, more than half of all PG-13 movies contain smoking scenes, according to the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education.

There’s no denying, however, that smoking is an important part of movie mythology. It’s hard to imagine screen legends such as Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum, Bette Davis or Susan Hayward without a cigarette or stogie.

Whether or not you’re watching Charlie Sheen go from TV actor to celebrity train wreck, the “Two and a Half Men” star has stirred a pot when it comes to his criticism of the addiction treatment industry.

Sheen’s televised rantings against Alcoholics Anonymous, his statements that he possesses “tiger’s blood” and has cured himself of drugs and booze through “his mind” have raised eyebrows among professionals who treat people with addictions.

The question remains: can you quit smoking, drugs or alcohol by willpower alone? Experts say it’s possible, but add that many who do usually relapse or weren’t technically addicted in the first place.

“Lots of people can quit on their own for a short time, but there’s always the risk they may return to use and that happens frequently,” said Ryan Vandrey, assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

“How do you define recovery?” Vandrey said. “I’m sure (Sheen) has gone several weeks or months without getting high or getting drunk, then he goes again. At what point do you define him as cured? Many people say it’s an ongoing disorder.”

For those who haven’t been following the tabloids, Sheen has had a public history of stays in various rehab centers beginning in the 1990s. He has also been arrested in several publicized domestic violence episodes and accidentally shot an ex-girlfriend.

But it’s the past few days when things started getting weird. CBS shut down production of the top-rated show “Two and a Half Men” after Sheen’s verbal attacks against the show’s producer. Sheen said he left rehab to cure himself at home along with two girlfriends he calls “The Goddesses.” And this week, a Los Angeles judge issued an order removing his two-year-old twins from his home after allegations of violence by his soon-to-be ex-wife, Brooke Mueller, who also has had a public history of drug use.

Despite Sheen’s history (and perhaps because of it), some psychologists say that rehab centers that offer an intense 30-day stay aren’t the answer for all patients.

“This is one of the big myths that the treatment industry perpetuates on the public,” said A. Thomas Horvath, a psychologist and president of Practical Recovery, a San Diego treatment center. “The majority of the public do so on their own. Rehab in itself is no panacea or (Sheen) wouldn’t have to go so many times.”

Charlie’s Sheen’s whirlwind media tour continued on ‘Piers Morgan Tonight’ (Weeknights, 9PM ET on CNN), where he sat down for his first live television interview since the recent controversy erupted.

He was a bit more contrite then he had been in interviews aired earlier in the day. He backed off from the financial demands he had been making of CBS, and he apologized for a remark he made about ‘Two And A Half Men’ co-creator Chuck Lorre that was perceived by some to be anti-Semitic.

But Sheen remained fairly unrepentant about the wild lifestyle he’s led.

“If you had your time again, would you ever get into drugs?” Morgan wondered.

“There’s a couple things I wish I hadn’t started, one of them is smoking cigarettes,” Sheen admitted, although he added that a recent CAT scan revealed he has the lungs of a non-smoker.

As for the drugs: “Yeah, but you know there is some school of thought that dictates we are the sum total of all of our experiences both good or bad, win, lose or draw … So I don’t think I would trade any of it, because I’m still alive, which is pretty cool.”

Anyone who’s either been watching TV or on the Internet over the last 24 hours couldn’t be any more aware of how alive Charlie Sheen currently is.

Daryl Hannah has jumped on board the fight to make movies “socially responsible” by challenging budding filmmakers to reconsider portraying smoking on screen–just in time for the Oscars. (Celebrity endorsements for causes seems to be a theme this week.) The actress perhaps best known for the movie Splash and for her, um, enthusiastic approach to activism, helped produce a short film that educates other filmmakers about the societal impact of smoking in the movies. The film, Redefining Cool, was launched by Legacy, which is the same organization that produced the groundbreaking, comprehensive “truth” campaign, a multimedia anti-smoking effort targeted at youth.

“I have a real understanding of the insidious and addictve nature of tobacco as well as the powerful influence of the ubiquitous images we are inundated by in the media. I have many friends who have battled with tobacco addiction. I have even struggled with it myself when I started smoking for a role that required me to smoke and it was really difficult to break the habit after 5 months of smoking regularly,” Hannah tells Fast Company.

“I even tried going to a hypnotist to help me quit. That wasn’t the answer for me. I ended up getting acupuncture, which gave me a kick-start and then I white knuckled it.”

Banning smoking in movies is hot these days–even China is on a quest to abolish smoking from the silver screen. In the United States a number of efforts have been made in the public health community–proponents even went so far as to propose a rating system for smoking scenes, the same way movies are rated for sex or violence.
